Whether you’re a novice user or a regular toker, cannabis salves are something you’ll want to familiarize yourself with.
It’s no secret that cannabis has a long list of benefits and uses, including cannabis salves. To help you better understand what salves are and how to use them, we’ve created an all-in-one guide to help you.
What Are Cannabis Salves
Cannabis salves are usually described as surface-level or topical applicants that can help to provide the positive effects of cannabis.
Usually, the cannabis salves consist of a cannabis-infused oil combined with beeswax to create a thick paste-like consistency.
If you weren’t familiar with the term, salves are basically a substance to spread on your skin with the goal of healing. It’s synonymous with balm or lotions – both examples of other treatment options.
While a topical product isn’t something that most avid users are jumping over one another to get, they certainly play a key role in the space. With properties like pain soothing, anti-aging, and relaxation – it’s no wonder that cannabis salves have risen in popularity, with many wondering how to make them at home.
If you’re one of those people looking for an affordable and accessible way to make cannabis salves, here’s everything you need to know.
How Do Cannabis Salves Work?
Cannabis salves work much like the general idea of topical treatments. They can provide both localized and all-over comfort as the cannabis is absorbed in the skin.
Don’t worry, though, much of the benefits provided are without the typical high associated with cannabis or marijuana, more specifically. While salves fall into the category of topical treatment, they work in their own unique way.
Making Cannabis Salves
1. Gather Your Ingredients
Much like any homemade remedy, you have the ability to customize as you see fit. Generally, however, there are a few key ingredients you’ll need when preparing your salves. They include:
- Cannabis trimmings and buds (usually leftovers)
- Oil of choice (olive, coconut, avocado, almond, etc.)
- Scent of Choice (opt for essential oils for a natural option)
- Shea butter
2. Choose Your Materials Carefully
When rounding up your ingredients, you’ll want to choose all ingredients carefully, but especially your cannabis strain.
Because we want the salve to be soothing, opting for a strain that’s calmer versus one that is designed to wake you up or give you energy can help to make the overall salve better.
Also, be sure to choose your essential oil based on both a scent you love and the effect you want. For example, if you need something soothing, opt for lavender or lemongrass over an energizing peppermint.
3. Decarboxylating the Cannabis
Unfortunately, you can’t just add your cannabis pieces to the oil and call it a day. There is a special process to help make the cannabis easily absorbed so that it can properly work in the salve.
This process is called decarboxylating. To do this, you’ll need to break up the pieces and stems, put them on a baking sheet, and then put them in the oven for 40 minutes to an hour at 240 degrees Fahrenheit.
4. Infuse Your Oil
When your salves are cooled, you’ll want to pulse them or grind them until they become a powder. That powder can then be added to a jar, and you’ll proceed to add your oil over the powder.
From there, you’ll need to let the powder steep in the oil to help properly infuse. This can be done by putting the jar in a warm water bath on the low setting of a crockpot for eight hours.
After steeping is complete, you’ll strain the oil mixture to keep all of the good stuff in and the unnecessary stuff out.
5. Finish Off the Salve
Technically, the mixture you completed in step 4 is ready for use. However, if you’re looking for a salve, you’ll want to create more of a balm texture which means adding that beeswax from earlier.
The oil will need to be warm for this process, so be sure to warm it up before adding in your beeswax to help the two substances meld together. Continue adding beeswax until you reach the desired consistency.
Salves are an excellent tool for helping to sooth your body naturally. Luckily, the process to make a cannabis salve is relatively easy and only requires a few simple ingredients.
The primary thing to look out for is ensuring that you’re using the highest quality ingredients available to help make sure you are using products that are good for you and have the desired effects you want.
